enTourage Systems, Inc.™, announced yesterday that the Egypt-based Arab Academy has purchased an enTourage eDGe for each of its 2010 incoming freshman students to aid with their studies.
The enTourage eDGe comes preloaded with e-textbooks in a variety of subjects to complement the school’s courses. The students will use the devices throughout the 2010 academic year, which began in late September.
The enTourage eDGe is a multimedia tablet comprised of two screens – an LCD and E-Ink screen – to merge the functionalities of an e-reader, touchscreen tablet, notepad and audio/video player and recorder into one, all-purpose solution. Students can use the two screens to further engage their content and make it multimedia rich, such as embedding relevant Web pages and videos in e-textbooks, highlighting and annotating text, taking notes that can be shared as a PDF and recording professors’ lectures.
“The enTourage eDGe dualbook is ideal for science and technology students, as it allows them to view charts from e-books in color, draw diagrams and equations in the Journal function which are stored digitally, and easily collaborate with class and lab mates,” said Asghar Mostafa, CEO of enTourage Systems, Inc. “Aligning with the Arab Academy affords us a great opportunity to see the unique ways their student body will take advantage of the enTourage eDGe’s features.”
”After two years of extensive research of available tablets and e-readers, we selected the enTourage eDGe for our incoming 2010 freshman class because of its superior capabilities,” said Professor Mohammed Youssef, vice president of communications information and technology affairs at the Arab Academy. “The enTourage eDGe is an innovative platform that combines all of the necessary technologies for today’s student in one tool, and we look forward to seeing how it complements traditional teaching methods.”
The enTourage eDGe is made up of a hinged 10.1” LCD screen and 9.7” E-Ink screen. Users can surf the Web, watch videos and create or edit Microsoft Office documents on the LCD screen, while reading e-books and taking notes on the E-Ink side. The device also has a built-in camera and microphone to store and play audio and video content and playback later. The enTourage eDGe runs on the Android operating system and backs up all content on enTourage Systems’ servers for safe keeping. The device folds a full 360 degrees and orients its displays horizontally or vertically, to view as a book, single screen, or prop up laptop style.
enTourage Systems’ e-book store includes 250,000 trade titles, 25,000 e-textbooks, as well as over one million free public domain books digitized by Google. The e-book store is a key component to the enTourage Systems eco-system, providing a controlled user experience that also includes document back-up and sharing between devices.
enTourage Systems will be on-site at EDUCAUSE October 12-15 in Anaheim, CA at booth #325.
